Background Year 2004 3. Citizen meet on Environment -Bathinda: Awell attended meeting was organised at Bathinda to discuss issues concerning environmental sustainability in Punjab. The issue of spreading cancer in the villages of Bathinda was the main concern .Shri A.C.Tejpal ,Income Tax Commissioner ,Bathinda was the chief guest and Dr. Shiv Dutt Gupta presided over the meeting. A seminar on sustainable agriculture and ecology was organised in association with District Bar Association, Ferozepur on 21st Feb.2004. Advocates and farmers from the area have attended this seminar. 5. Students & youth Programme Meeting : To initiate student youth participation in ecology and natural resources conservation, to sensitize the younger generation about ecological crises Kheti Virasat has started establishing study circles in various educational institutions of Punjab -Chandigarh . As today Kheti Virasat has enrolled several students from some important educational institutions in Punjab namely- GNDU, Amritsar , PAU - Ludhiana, PEC- Chandigarh, Punjabi University -Patiala. Some more institutions will be covered in next session . Apart from this Kheti Virasat is also coordinating with rural youth clubs on the same lines . Kheti virasat is providing technical support and guidance to several youth clubs in the state. As the ecological threat to Punjab so intense , wide and multi -dimensional that the massive peoples movement is needed to save Punjab from ecological crises and student and youth can play a major role to generate such people's movement . To streamline the activities for students and youth a consultative group was formed in March 2004 and its first meeting was held at Nabha office on 2nd May 2004. Youth representatives and 18 students attended this meeting from all over Punjab 1.Workshop on organic products Marketing : 1. Seminars of Bio Fuel from Ethanol and Jatropha in Punjab 2. Seminar on ecological threats to Punjab - Ferozepur: To chalk out a proper strategy for the sale and marketing of organic produces a one day in house workshop was organised on 8th Febraury 2004. Senior KVIC officials Shri Desh Raj Tomar, Head Organic Food Division, Shri A.K.Garg, Assisstant Director KVIC ,Shri Ramesh Dagar, Prominent Organic farmer from Sonepat (Haryana) and farmers growing organic crops all over Punjab has been participated in the workshops. Various issues about organic food production ,certification ,marketing ,organically storage, semi-processing, eco-friendly packing and other related topics were discussed at a length. # Nehru Yuva Kendra # NGOs supported by CAPART. # Khadi & Village Industries Commission # Department of Botanical & Environmental Sciences, GNDU # Center for Science & Environment # TRCs supported by CAPART. $Rural Sustainable Agriculture and Technology Mela # College Level Competitions # Cultural Programme # Seminars $ Workshops on organic farming Workshops : Daily workshops on organic farming were organised to aware the farmers about various eco friendly techniques of farming. Sustainable agriculture and ecology Participation of farmers & Youngsters : Large numbers of farmers & youngsters were mobilized from various parts of Punjab. Large participation of farmers & youngsters and their organisations were ensured in the workshops and seminars so that, they are directly benefitted with the exposures to latest eco-friendly technologies and farming practices 6. Launching of Punjab Natural Foods : From last four years Kheti Virasat was working hard to convinse the farmers of Punjab to adopt organic farming practices. Though the farmers also realises the need of organic and eco- sustainable agriculture, but main hesitation of farmers was assured sale and marketing of their organic production. Henceforth , Kheti Virasat established an organic consumers network through its public awareness programmes. As a result two supplementary networks has been developed to take care of one another's needs . After running informal organic consumer supply institutions. Thus, the Punjab Natural Foods was launched in April 2004. To start with Nabha was selected for pilot market projects. Citizens interested in assured organic products were made members and home delivery of organic vegetables and grains was started.
